History of the Parish

From a basement, to a school, to a building project...

In response to the rapid growth on the south of Salt Lake County, Bishop George Niederauer officially erected Saint Andrew Parish December 12, 2005. The Rev. Francisco Pires was named the first pastor. On August 6, 2006 the First Mass was celebrated in English and Spanish with about 15 people in each Mass at the Rectory located at 3129 Martinez Way in Riverton.

On August 27, 2006 the Masses were moved to the Megaplex at The District in South Jordan where about 100 people attended each Mass.

A generous grant from the ALSAM Foundation led to the construction of Saint Andrew Catholic School. The new school opened in August of 2008 and was formally dedicated by Bishop John Wester on September 13. Parish Masses were moved to the gymnasium of the school. In March 2009, the St. Andrew Food Pantry was established in the basement of the new rectory just across the parking lot from the school. The pantry continues to be an important outreach of the parish.

The parish and school continued to grow and develop under the Rev. John Evans (2011-2014), Rev. Marco Lopez (2014-2020), and Rev. Joseph Delka (2020 - present). In July of 2013, the Building Fund was established with the hope of one day building a church. Thanks to some generous donors, the Diocese was able to begin the process in 2025 to purchase a beautiful 10 acre plot in Daybreak, west across the Mountain View Corridor from the new Ballpark at American First Square. The Saint Andrew Building Committee was established and met for the first time in April 2025 to begin the selection of an architect. The process concluded with the selection of MHTN Architects.

The work of designing our church began in earnest. In July 2025, the preliminary concept design was revealed to the parish. Work continued on Phase I of the Concept Design until its revealing to the parish and wider community on February 14, 2026.
